Packet8 MobileTalk Update

Friday, April 4th, 2008

I mentioned awhile back that Packet8 had brought a product to market called Mobiletalk, and that you could use it to bypass your cell phone provider’s network when making international calls. Well the software and service are even easier and cheaper than I though they would be.

Come to find out, once you install the software on your phone, there is nother else to do. You don’t have to dial any dial around numbers, you don’t have to remember any PIN’s, nothing, nadda, zilch. All you do is dial whichever international number you want to connect with, and the software on your phone takes over.

When you dial the the international number, your phone will call out to a local number and transfer the call to Packet8’s VoIP network. Since you don’t have to remember to do it, this is going to save a lot of lazy peopl a lot of money. I know that I hardly ever remember to use my Airespring dial around service when making international cell phone calls, so this should make it way easier for me, and others, to save money.

While the international calls are cheaper, somewhere in the 3¢ to 4¢ range for Europe and the 5¢ to 7¢ range for Asia, you need to remember that your cell phone provider will still be counting the minutes against your monthly total. If you have an unlimited minute plan, then that, of course, isn’t a problem.

For those of you who don’t have unlimited cell phone service, you might want to take a look at Sprint, who is now offering unlimited everything for $99.99 per month. I saw a news release/ad that their new CEO/President or whatever he is did last week that said they were now going to give unlimited texting, downloads, ringtones, minutes and whatever else etc… for one flat monthly fee. I don’t know if I got it all correct, but that was the jist of the message. You can check it out for yourself and let me know if I’m right.

Here’s a list of phone manufacturers who currently have phones that work with Packet8’s Mobiletalk service:

Acer • Anex TEK • Asus • ATT • Audiovox • Ben Q • Blackberry • Cingular • Dopod • Eten • Fifth_Media • FujutsuSiemens • Gigabyte • HP • HTC • I-Mate • Inventec • Izen • Kinpo • Lenovo • Mitac • Motorola • Nokia • O2 • Orange • ORSiO • Palm Treo • Pantech • Paragon • Pharos • Qtek • Quanta • Qwest • RoverPC • Samsung • Sharp • Siemens/BenQ • Sprint • Symbian • Tatung • TechFaithWireless • Telefonica • T-Mobile • Toshiba • Treo/Palm • UTStarcom • Verizon • Vodafone • Windows Mobile

Tpad: WiFi Mobile VoIP

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Those of you who want to start saving on cell phone minutes, and have an N or E series Nokia mobile phone can start using the WiFi feature on the phone, along with a company called Tpad, to make calls all over the world using your cell phone and any WiFi hotspot.

Here’s a list of featues offered by Tpad:

  • Free Mobile Calls – If you’ve both got Tpad, it means free mobile calls when you’re both in a Wi-Fi area.
  • Low Cost International Calls – Whether you’re in Wi-Fi or not, your calls will always reach you (via GSM call forwarding or our free voicemail)
  • Make International Calls at Local Rates – For your callers, it’s just a call to a mobile number, but it will be cheaper to you if you’re overseas (Tpad doesn’t charge roaming fees) or if you’re usually charged for inbound calls (Tpad doesn’t charge for inbound calls)
Tpad calls can help get through where GSM calls can’t (a surprising number of people have poor GSM mobile reception at home, for example).
  • Free Voicemail – never miss any important calls again.
  • Free Voicemail to Email – Listen / edit / save your personal messages by accessing them from your personal email address.
  • No Connection Charge – Tpad doesn’t believe in charging you something for nothing. With Tpad you won’t pay us for the privilege of connecting your call.
  • Per Second Billing – Only pay for the seconds that you use, for instance, if your call only lasts for 30 seconds, you only pay for 30 seconds and not 1 minute.

Tpad accounts are free, so run over to Tpad and sign up today!
