Is it possible to transfer a US cell phone number to a VOIP number?

I have a US verizonwireless cellphone and am moving to Nepal for 12-15 months. I’d like to transfer the number to a VOIP service (skype would be my choice) while I’m gone, so that I can continue using the number and keep it for when I return. Is this possible?
