VoIP – Does it work? Is anyone in the Atlanta area using it? Especially for Business?

my son has it in Ney York through his cable service and it has been working great since he got it a year ago, never any problems
I am not in your area – but I use it and love it. Completely disconnected my land line in January. The call quality does suffer sometimes – you can get disconnection, echo etc. but I can change the amount of bandwidth to increase quality. You have to remember that if the Internet goes down or you lose power you have no phone. I have vonage and i automatically forward my calls to my cell phone if that happens.
What I find funny is Burgess gellett (the same man who wrote “Purple Cow”) came up with the word “voip” in the 30s.
He used it to mean a food of questionable nutritious value (and in this world of Pringles and Cheez Whiz, he may not have been far off the mark)
I’m in the Atlanta greater area and have been using Vonage for over two years for residential use. I have Comcast as my ISP (cable modem). I’m very satisfied with both Vonage and Comcast and both are reliable. There are times when there is outage from Comcast but that usually happens late night.
Before you switch over check any services that you plan to use over the phone line such a security system. My security system needed replacement of some parts to work with VOIP. I have a phone card from Sprint that failed to work. Sprint’s answer was that my phone number did not match from where my call originated from. To provide additional info, its gets converted to POTS at Vonage and it depends where Vonage has a node.
Vonage sends voice mail as an email attachment and I really like that feature when I’m travelling.

You might want to check with Comcast to see if they provide VOIP Phone service in your market. It’s more reliable then a service like Vontage that uses public VOIP, where Comcast doesn’t, so you don’t have the packet loss (voice echo’s, blank spots, etc), and if your power goes out, it still works. Call Comcast and see if they offer it in your area or not.
