China announced last week that they would start blocking all voice over IP telephone services, except for those provided by China Telecom and China Unicom. This is going to make it rough on Chinese students, and business people with contracts in the United States and Europe, since a large chunk of those communications have been taking place on non-Chinese VoIP based products, like Skype.

According to the English version of the “People’s Daily Online“:

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said all VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) phone services are illegal on the Chinese mainland, except those provided by telecommunications carriers China Telecom and China Unicom. The ministry gave no timetable on when the ruling takes effect.

Where do you think this new set of self-protective laws will take the Chinese government and their business relationships with the outside world?

eBay.com, who owns Skype, says it will do an IPO of Skype next year. This comes just one day after the news was full of talk about Skype’s original owners trying to buy it back from eBay.com.

Since eBay bought Skype, their reach in the VoIP market has exploded, and Skype now has over 400 million users worldwide. It should be interesting to see what happens now, but I’d bet money that Google will pick up Skype some time in the next month or two, and use it, in connection with their new voice to text and text to voice technology, to run google ads on the Skype interface, in real time, while the conversation is going on.

Think about the possibilities here. Say that someone is having a conversation on airline ticket costs to France. Can’t you just imagine Google serving up airline ticket prices to France while you’re talking? I mean, Google will know where you are flying from because of your profile and IP address, and you just said the words flying to france, so they should be able to pop up an offer within a few seconds that matches all your needs…

Kind of creepy, huh? What do you think?

There are lots of theories out there wondering if it was a hack, and if so, are Skype user’s machines at risk?

Read Gregg Keizer’s report over at ComputerWorld.com for interesting reasons put forth by experts on why Skype’s “Windows Update Story Doesn’t Fly”. After reading Greg’s article, then read Skype’s official answer that was posted on their website….

Here’s what happened according to Villu Arak, over at Skype’s Heartbeat Website,

On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update.

The high number of restarts affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact.

If you have a Nokia N800 tablet phone, you might be happy to learn that the new software update has support for Skype. Now, whenever your Nokia 800 is within network range, you will be able to make your calls via Skype instead of over your carrier’s network. While this might not be that big of a deal to most people, it will be to those who would like to use Skype for international calling on their cell phones.

As more cell phones become VoIP enabled, or, as the N800 is, completely web enabled. More calls will continue to be routed over the internet instead of cell towers. If you are interested in getting an N800, try Letstalk or one of Inphonic’s Affiliates since they usually have the best prices on the net. You can also try getting one through eBay if you don’t need a phone with a plan.

For those of you who don’t know what Skype is, it is a softphone application that allows it’s users to make web based telephone calls, as well as receive them. For more information, visit <a href=http://www.voipspider.com/voip-plans?Plan=Skype" rel="nofollow">Skype.com.
