Rapid Prototyping: How Exactly It Works?

What is rapid prototyping? It is the process of creation real physical objects by rapid prototyping machines with the usage of solid freeform fabrication. The history of rapid prototyping technology dates back to 80’s years of the 20th century. Prototyping model were created then by means of the first rapid prototyping techniques. Nowadays, such application of rapid prototyping techniques as manufacturing of small quality parts is known and, of course, many other applications of prototyping in different industries and spheres. These small parts are mostly produced for designers and artists who create complex figures and samples, which are later shown at fine-art exhibitions.

The process of rapid prototyping modeling cannot work without computer-aided design. Firstly, the virtual model of the ordered object is created on the screen of a computer. Then 3D application used for creation of the prototyping model uses special add-ons to section the image, so that segments appeared after sectioning could be easily shifted, cut off or laid down again if needed. The computer and prototyping machine intercommunicate. The computer receive a command, given by a computer and gets to creation of the real prototyping model. The process of machine rapid prototyping is quite simple. Remember the segments created in 3d application by means of cross sectioning? Well, these sections practically turn into real layers of the material, which must build up the future model. A machine lays down the material layer by layer shaping the prototyping model as it is shown on the screen of the computer monitor. The machine is working until the model is finished. Some designer calls this technology a WYSIWYG approach that is to be deciphered as ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get’ process. Not only designers use this abbreviation to describe the process, but also programmers do. It means that the image on the screen is absolute copy of the model created by the prototyping machine. This term is also used by web-programmers (HTML-based programs). However, the widest usage of the abbreviation is focused on the prototyping. The abbreviation can be transcribed as [wiziwig].

The materials used for the rapid prototyping are different. Those can be fluids, powders, metals, liquids, rapid prototyping wax (that proved to be one of the most popular prototyping materials). The ’layer-by-layer’ technology is one of the greatest innovations of the high-technology epoch, because, taking into consideration the flexibility of the used material, any geometrical form can be created observing the tiniest details and parts.

To cut a long story short, rapid prototyping is not that rapid as it sounds. The process of model creation can take weeks, because the process itself is very accurate and painstaking. Apart from this, no project can manage with only one prototype. Two or even more prototyping models are usually created within the project, considering all changes and improvements made by designers. Still it does not diminish the great functionality of this technology.
